Open Daily 9:30–6:00, Monday Until 8:00
Since 2011 Bishops’ House has been kept open by volunteers. Sheffield City Council continue to maintain the building but it is the entirely volunteer run Friends of Bishops’ House charity that works in partnership with the Council to keep this wonderful building open for the public to enjoy.
The building is a treasured by the local community and attracts the interest of tourists and researchers from around the world. We plan to continue to enhance access to the House is many different ways, sharing the historical secrets we continue to unlock. If you can help us to continue our work, we would love to hear from you.
What is involved in volunteering?
We always need volunteers who can offer time at a weekend, usually a three hour session on a Saturday or Sunday, if possible every four to six weeks. This is mainly welcoming visitors and giving the odd bit of information when asked. Knowledge of history is definitely not a requirement, we have lots of information at hand and you will pick up facts about Bishops’ House without even realising it! We won’t ask you to do doing anything at all difficult to remember and will make sure that for your first volunteering sessions you are paired up with experienced volunteers.
Volunteering at Bishops’ House is a rewarding experience. It can be a chance for some peace apart from the daily hustle and bustle of life, or an opportunity to meet others with shared interests, and it is always satisfying to see visitors leave the building with an even bigger smile on their face than when they entered.
No volunteer ever works alone during a public opening session. Volunteers offer slots via e-mail and by consulting an online rota. We are fully covered with employers and public liability insurance and have all the appropriate health and safety and volunteer policies in place. We will of course cover travelling expenses.
We also need volunteers to help with special events, so if you can’t do weekends that doesn’t mean we can’t make use of you! In addition a number of our volunteers are currently training to do guided tours. As the organisation grows new and varied opportunities will continue to arise. Volunteering at Bishops House is an excellent opportunity both to make using of existing skills, but to develop new ones too!
