This concert offers a unique opportunity to see three hugely experienced improvising musicians in an intimate setting in a variety of combinations. The music promises to be delicate, explosive, melodic and highly interactive as well as presenting a unique spectacle; a treat for ears and eyes.
Helmut Lemke: Long strings
John Jasnoch: ‘ud, banjo, ukulele
Neil Carver: Acoustic guitar, percussion, water, pipes.
German sound artist Helmut Lemke moved to the UK in 1996. He has worked everywhere from the frozen seas round Greenland, to a palace in Venice. Along the way he has collaborated with dancers, scientists, architects, poets and archaeologists. He has taught at art academies & universities in Germany, France, England and Finland. In this trio he will deploy his unique arrangement of ‘long-strings’ that will use any free space in the room. The strings can be plucked and bowed and can resonate with both delicacy and violence. He has played in successful and longstanding duos with both John and Neil.
Over the last 35 years John Jasnoch has established a niche as a multiple plucked string instrument specialist (guitars, banjos, ‘ud, mandolin, etc.)At home with both Country and Western and improvisation John has been said by reviewers to be the missing link between Joe Morris and Bill Frisell. He has played in a huge variety of groupings with musicians from around the world, been invited to play at legendary guitarist Derek Bailey’s Company week, and toured several times with American Jazz sax. star Sonny Simmons as well as with vocalist Linda Sharrock.
Neil Carver has lurked in the Sheffield music scene for some 30 years, sometimes producing sonic landscapes the BBC described as ‘beguilingly strange and strangely beguiling,’ at other times settling for guitar mayhem. In this trio he will be using semi tuned shells as percussion and exploiting the musical possibilities of using playing instruments in water. His acoustic guitar will receive conventional treatment.
