John Brown

It is with great sadness that we must announce that after a long illness, Friends of Bishops’ House Chairman John Brown passed away peacefully last Tuesday morning.

Since its inception five years ago, John had been a mainstay of the Friends, overseeing the development of the organisation to what it is today. For most of his working life John had been an architect with Sheffield Council.  During his retirement, Bishops’ House became a focus for John’s love and knowledge of historical architecture and history.

John was truly a pillar of the local community.  In addition to his work with the Friends, John was very active in St Paul’s Church, Chair of Norton Lees Residents Association, and leader of Norton Lees Local History group, giving regular, well-attended talks on various facets of our local history. In previous years, John had also been active with St. Paul’s Players (both onstage and as a set designer) and Norton Cricket Club, where he was a spin bowler.

John was always friendly, calm and erudite, providing excellent company to whoever got to know him. He will be sorely missed.

There will be a service at St.Paul’s Church, Norton Lees at 9.15am on Saturday 14th March.  The family have requested that instead of flowers, any donations to St.Luke’s Hospice may be sent c/o G & M Lunt Funeral Directors, 36 Abbey Lane, Sheffield, S8 0GB
