People once protected their homes with magical inscriptions and objects, which they believed would keep witchcraft and evil spirits at bay. Some magical markings of this kind survive in Bishops’ House. This presentation explores the fear of harmful magic and demons in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England, and relates this to the larger history of witchcraft and the Devil. Darren Oldridge is Professor of Early Modern History, University of Worcester.
